One of the most important places of pilgrimage and the location of the renowned Pushkar Fair is the Pushkar Lake, which is found in the small town of Pushkar in Rajasthan's Ajmer district.

Given that the auspiciousness of this season is strongly stressed in Hindu sacred writings, the location becomes the centre of sincere devotion and pilgrimage when the Kartik (Oct-Nov) month descends.

Pushkar's lake is incredibly significant both historically and spiritually. It is largely linked to Lord Brahma and is mentioned in numerous holy Hindu texts and sources.

History

Three petals of the sacred lotus that Lord Brahma used to destroy the evil Vajranabha fell at three different locations, producing the springs that are today known  as Pushkar. Later.

It was mentioned in numerous sources in subsequent times, including the Sanchi inscriptions and the travel journals of the Chinese traveller Fa Xian.

Many Rajput kings and Ajmer's local chiefs over the years tried to bring Pushkar's fame back. With the exception of Akbar's reign,  the lake's influence was only diminished during Mughal era.

One of the holiest places for Hindus is Pushkar Lake, which is mostly visited for religious reasons. Around 500 temples and 52 ghats with varying religious significance surround the lake.

It is said that bathing in the lake during the Hindu month of Kartika cleanses the sins of the worshippers and heals their physical ills, particularly skin conditions.
