According to a geological study, the lake was formed due to the meteorite strike nearly 5,70,000 (0.57 Million) years ago. Initially, the formation of Lonar Crater was considered as this Lake was the result of a Volcano. But now it is confirmed that Lonar Lake was formed by a meteorite crash impact during the Pleistocene Epoch. It is one of the four known, hyper-speed, impact craters in basaltic stone anywhere on Earth. We’ll discuss Lonar Lake’s formation in detail in How Lonar Lake was formed blog post.

What kind of meteorite caused this giant impact structure?

As we all know a meteorite is a thing from space, such as a miniature rocky object which may contain a metal that hits the earth’s cover. Lonar crater being gouged out by the impact of a meteorite has been proved beyond doubt.

The meteorite may get separated from the comet or asteroids. On entering the earth’s atmosphere due to friction, these meteorites heat up and catch fire. According to Nasa, due to friction between meteorites and the atmosphere, these meteorites burn.

Whereas one theory says that these meteoroids burn due to the ram pressure. Ram pressure is a physics term for a pressure shock wave in front of a body moving rapidly in a fluid medium.

These burning meteoroids are called meteors or shooting stars. However, sometimes a meteoroid does not burn and falls on the earth’s surface. When this happens, it’s called a meteorite. Out of the few meteorites on Earth, this is one of them is in Maharashtra, India.

In general, we call a meteor a shooting star. In India, people start asking a wish for that shooting star by closing their eyes. It’s a kind of superstition that could be what they have in their mind.

This meteor couldn’t burn completely and did not become a shooting star, i.e. a meteor, and fell on the surface of the earth.
